* Labour gained one their biggest post-war successes in local politics in the municipal elections on Thursday, winning all four seats which were contested, and in doing so captured three seats formerly held by Independents.

* Twenty-six-year-old Ann Tanner, of Port Road, Barry, was the winner of the Barry round of the Dairy Maid contest, held at the Wenvoe Village Hall on Friday evening, when there were 12 entries for the title.

* Ald Brinley Williams, who has been a member of the Barry Town Council continuously since 1952, will be installed as the new Mayor of Barry in a ceremony at the Memorial Hall on Monday next.

* Long-serving Barry councillor Haydn Holmes has been elected to succeed Cllr John Smith as leader of the Vale council’s Labour group during the next 12 months.

* After months of intense activity on renovations, refurbishment and improvements, the Majestic Barry Island Holiday Centre opens its doors to the first of the 1988 summer visitors on Saturday.

* Barry man Kenneth Hawkins, who has produced a Cadoc’ weight retaining collar to stop weights falling off training systems, is one of 11 inventors whose innovations will compete for the title of Welsh Invention of the Year.
