* There are strong hopes that the Government at this stage is not prepared to accept the recommendation of the Rochdale Committee to close the port of Barry. This inference is drawn from a statement made in the House of Commons on Wednesday week by Vice-Admiral John Hughes Hallett, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport.

* The new manager of the British Sailors’ Society’s Rest Home in Thompson Street is Roland Grigsby formerly of Canvey Island. This is Mr Grigsby’s first post of this type.

* John Jones, the Barry Fashion House, is celebrating the opening of their new fashion theatre with mannequin shows on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 10, 1988:

* Increasingly concerned at the amount of drink related crime which often results in vandals and thieves striking at shop premises, the Barry Chamber of Trade and Commerce is organising a seminar on the subject.

* Nurses from Sully Hospital were among thousands of their colleagues and ancillary workers who staged strikes and protests across Wales in a St David’s Day campaign for increased funding for the National Health Service.

* In an ancient ceremony, following a tradition first established in the 13th Century, Mrs D Vivien Liles of Penarth, was recently accorded the honour of being made a freeman of the City of London. Mrs Liles, who has practiced in Barry as an optician at J Gribble Mayne and Co since 1964 is a freeman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.
