* From time to time stories come to light of mean and petty acts, and people have become fairly accustomed to them – but some Barry people are still wondering about the mentality of the people who in recent weeks have been raiding the coal bunkers of the old age pensioners’ cottages in Dudley Place.

* Barry Town have played no match at Jenner Park since they lost at home to Ton Pentre on December 22. The snow covered pitch has been partially cleared, but subsequent heavy frosts have made its condition dangerous. A thaw is promised for today (Thursday), but it is still doubtful whether the pitch will be playable for Saturday’s Welsh League home against Pontllanfraith.

* Twenty-seven holders of allotments at Barry Island are to be given notice to quit because the land they rent is affected by Billy Butlin’s holiday camp proposals.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of January 14, 1988:

* A mystery oil spillage, which stained stretches of sand and rocks at Barry Island during the weekend caused only ‘limited pollution’ and was being treated as a ‘minor incident’ by the Vale council.

* More than £5,700 worth of Wales Gas stamps used for the payment of gas bills were stolen in a raid on the Barry showroom in Holton Road last week.

* The Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council have set their sights on a near 2p in the £ reduction in their rate. If the Vale counciil meet spending targets set by the Welsh Office their rate will be cut by 8.38 per cent from 22.79p to 20.88p in the £.
