EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of December 13, 1962:

* Is there a danger that if Butlins establish a holiday camp at Barry Island the people of Barry will be denied access to Nell’s Point headland, which has been a favourite spot for local anglers and trippers for many years? Sidney A Luen of Cold Knap, Barry, a familiar figure on Barry’s beaches, is convinced that there is a real danger of this unless the people of Barry make a protest.

* One of the four Government "rebels" who joined Labour MPs in supporting the necessity for leasehold reform in Parliament last week was Raymond Gower MP for Barry, who spoke boldly against the Government and at one point was cheered by Labour members. He voted for the Bill against the Government.

* Staff Nurse Gaynor Evans was awarded a gold medal last week at Llandough Hospital after being chosen the best nurse throughout her training. Gaynor is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Horace Evans of Woodlands Road, Barry.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of December 10, 1987:

* Barry Police have joined a swelling chorus of objection to any more licensed premises being allowed in the town’s Broad Street/High Street area. Voicing his objection to plans for a wine-bar/disco on land south of Broad Street between a garage and furniture warehouse, Barry divisional commander Chief Superintendent Brian Jenkins said the police fully supported the community in opposing the development.

* Rhoose water skiers Peter John and Phil Ashman, who completed a sponsored water ski across the Bristol Channel in June, presented a cheque for £800 to the Llandough Hospital Special Children’s Trust. The 32-mile round trip between Fontygary and Watchet was completed with Philip skiing the outward leg and Peter taking the role on the homeward run.

* Local businesswoman Vivien Pollard has been appointed a non-executive member of the South Wales Electricity Board. Her appointment is for three years from January 1, 1988, and has been made by Cecil Parkinson, Secretary of State for Energy.
