EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of November 15, 1962:
* Further moves to press the Minister of Transport for an early decision against the recommendations of the Rochdale Committee to close Barry Docks were indicated by a statement issued by the Mayor (Cllr Bert King) to the "News and Herald" yesterday (Wednesday).
* Traders who turned up at the meeting of Barry Town Council expecting a decision to be made on the redevelopment of King Square and part of Holton Road as a shopping centre, came away still uncertain of their future.
* Two-and-a-half years, two continents, two sub-continents, three oceans and 60,000 miles lay behind Clive Lewis, 26, of Barry Road, as he wheeled his scooter up King Square on Tuesday to receive a civic welcome from the Mayor and Mayoress of Barry, Cllr and Mrs Bert King, and a more emotional one from his mother and father and younger sister.

* The second stage of Barry Island’s effort to create Blackpool-style lights has now been completed with the switch-on of a spectacular lighting display on the Esplanade Buildings.
* A standing ovation was given to Vale Mayor Cllr Evelyn Lloyd by her Conservative council colleagues after a Labour motion of no-confidence in her was defeated by a majority of 26-14.
*Almost 400 residents have joined Barry’s Broad Street and High Street traders in opposing plans for a wine bar and discotheque on a vacant site at Broad Street near its junction with Island Road and the docks access road. More than 80 residents signed a protest petition at the weekend meeting attended by Vale ward members Cllrs Emlyn Williams and Reg Dunkley, together with Barry town councillor Fay Lloyd.
