Memories of Island

WITH reference to a letter from Mr B Kirke, Crossways Street, Barry (Barry & District News, September 27) in which he mentioned memories of Barry Island.

I could add those of my own when the beach there was so crowded that when the tide was right in we had to get close against the wall or leave the beach altogether. There were two pleasure boats, which plied for hire when the tide was well in and passengers gained access to them by ‘piers on wheels’, which were removed from there when the water depth was not suitable. Passengers were taken round the bay from point to point. They were called Silver King and Silver Queen and during the winter they were stood in what I believe were called the limekilns in the Old Harbour.
