Can you help?

I’D LIKE to make an appeal on behalf of Ioan Williams, a young Dinas Powys man who is a student at the excellent Bro Morgannwg school in Barry.

He has been selected to travel to Patagonia with other young people from Wales to help with voluntary work with children in the Welsh speaking community out there in South America.

He has collected a lot of money from dog-walking, babysitting, doing odd jobs, quiz nights in the Seashore Grill in Sully, individual sponsorship from friends and family, and a donation from his Community Council - but he is still way short of the £2,100 sum he needs for the trip. It has not been easy with the competing interests of other events like the successful Eisteddfod this year in the Vale, and he also appreciates that many families in the Vale are struggling to pay their everyday bills. For that reason he has tried to get sponsorship from the banks and he has also written to the 50 most profitable companies in Wales...without success.

So if there are any readers out there who are willing to help him reach his target with any sum, however small, as he travels next week, I know he will be most grateful. He is making an 11th hour Taff Trail bike ride on Sunday, with his friends, the morning after his 18th birthday, as his final effort. If he is lucky enough to raise more than he needs, the extra funds will go to the Urdd charity which is organising the trip.
