BIFFA has the contract to take the Vale of Glamorgan’s co-mingled recycling, sending it for mechanical sorting to Walsall after basic checking and baling at Biffa’s depot in Cardiff Bay.
As the Vale’s two year contract with Biffa is ending shortly, FoE asks for it not to be extended but subject to fundamental review. FoE suspects that Biffa’s comingled system for mechanical sorting of co-mingled waste leads to a lot of rejects and low quality recyclates. Proper figures on this should be provided.
Waste policy prescribes that we should sort and treat the recycled material in Wales**, providing jobs in south-east Wales and providing feedstock for Welsh manufacturing businesses.
Bridgend uses an efficient kerbside collection system, so the let’s see if we can adopt something similar in the Vale.
