Well done!

MAY we, through the pages of your paper, congratulate the pupils, teachers and parents of Oakfield School for all their dedicated hard work which has resulted in the school being presented with an Eco-Schools Green Flag award.

It was at the UN Rio Earth Summit back in 1992 that a need to involve young people in finding solutions to environmental and sustainable development challenges at a local level was identified.

The Eco-Schools programme has since developed into a truly international initiative that encourages pupils to engage with environmental issues. The topic areas include: litter, waste reduction, recycling, transport, healthy living, renewable energy, water conservation, school grounds and global citizenship.

Most importantly pupils take key roles in decision making and participation in order to reduce the environmental impact of their school and of course this helps the pupils with their personal and citizenship development.

Oakfield School has gone through a difficult and challenging couple of years but is now firmly on the way up. Once again well done!
