Ron a character

IT was very interesting to see the Barry AFC picture (Barry & District News, September 6) and read comments from readers in particular about ‘hard as iron’ Ron Snowden.
Ron also played cricket for Barry at the Barry Athletic Island ground and brought with him an intensely competitive spirit.
He readily volunteered to go and field in the ‘firing line’ positions close to the bat and prepared to accept any bumps and bruises that came his way - and he took some fine catches on both sides of the wicket. No helmets and padding for fielders in those days either.
Ron was a very determined batsman as well. He hated it when his innings was ended and often when this happened his bat would reach the pavilion before he did, with him following on behind berating himself and others for his dismissal.
Sadly Ron passed away a few years ago but his sporting achievements have left an indelible memory for many of us who were around at that time in the town.
He was a truly great character on and off the field.
