Glass WAS on beach

I REFER to the reply in the July 2 edition, to my letter of June 25, regarding broken glass on the beach at Barry Island, by Clifford Parish, Operational Manager, at the Vale Council.

Firstly, I would like Mr Parish to understand, that it was the area on which we walked – from the prom wall to the sea – that I witnessed as being covered in glass, not the whole beach, on which I did not walk.

However bemused Mr Parish seems to be with the content of my letter, this was the fact on that particular day.

I am, however, aware of the work that the council do on the beach with their equipment, often witnessing similar work on beaches such as Weymouth and Bournemouth in Dorset, which I frequent often.

Sadly, this does not always clear such items as embedded glass and other items which have not been reached by the ‘mechanical sweeping machine’.

I commend the council for doing their utmost to combat litter left by the public and washed up from the sea.

I also congratulate them on the ‘Blue Flag’ award.

My letter was not a criticism of the council’s work upon the beach, but of the public’s littering and laziness towards picking up and taking home their waste.

I hope this letter helps to alleviate Mr Parish’s bemusement.
