Let's control the cyclists

I AM grateful for the response from Clifford Parish of the Vale of Glamorgan Council (Barry & District News, June 25) regarding my letter about cyclists on the promenade at Barry Island (Barry & District News, June 18).

He says that cycling there has always been lawful and that any signage to the contrary was placed there to limit the number of cyclists.

Why then has this signage been removed, resulting in cyclists being given freedom to intimidate and frighten pedestrians just as they do illegally on most pavements?

In the past, cyclists were not tolerated on this promenade – but a change in society means that most people are now too afraid to say anything.

Only the other day my mother went to get up from one of the seats when a cyclist flashed past, missing her by inches and almost causing her to fall.

I think anyone who deliberately cycles on a promenade packed with pedestrians is behaving like a lout, particularly when there is no practical reason for them to be riding there – it is not a through route.

The police and council need to get this under control now, not wait for a model byelaw to be framed nationally which could take years.
