VALE readers have recently received a political leaflet which I suggest is rather misleading.

A motion was brought before the Vale council for the second time in December 2016 by myself and Sully Independent Cllr Kevin Mahoney to record all council meetings.

The first time that we brought it to council back in April 2016, the most vociferous objections were from a Plaid Cymru member who vehemently criticised the motion both in the council chamber and then again in the press.

In fact I had brought an initial request/suggestion similar to this via the formal questions to council on June 26, 2013. The motion failed due to opposition from Labour, Llantwit First Independents and Conservative councillors present.

The leaflet also claims credit for a proposal “that councillors’ attendance record be published monthly”. This hypocrisy beggars belief as again Independent Cllr Mahoney and myself brought the motion to council proposing councillor attendance records be published on the Vale’s website.

We were delighted to push the motion through despite opposition from every Labour councillor present.

Incredibly, if the editor of the leaflet had taken the trouble to check the facts he will have noticed that two regular offenders in regards to absence come from the ranks of his own political group.

Unfortunately on the night of the council meeting on December 14, I was in a hospital bed so fellow Independent Cllr Bob Penrose stood in for me as joint proposer of the motions to council.
