FURTHER to your recent article in the Barry & District News about the potential of putting a big screen in the vicinity of the Town Hall, I would like to express the following comments.

We are blessed with three iconic buildings in Barry – the Town Hall, The Docks Office and the Memorial Hall, all of which are well loved and in appropriate settings and I would not like to see anything detract from this in the future.

I am not sure from the article where this large TV screen is intended to go, but you mention in the article that it could be similar to the “screen which is attached to St David’s Hall and in Castle Square in Swansea”. I have seen the screen in Cardiff andI am sorry to say it but St David’s Hall bears no resemblance whatsoever to the Town Hall in any way.

The Town Hall is a listed building and as such merits special attention so that nothing detracts from its position in King Square, which is now surrounded by trees. I would hope that any plans that there are being suggested by any councillor would respect this position and any screen that may be considered (if at all) is not placed anywhere near the Town Hall building itself.

I would remind anyone that any development or change to the Town Hall needs adequate and strictly enforced planning permission, because of the listed status of the building. I think it’s important that we protect our heritage and would oppose any such plan.
