WITH reference to Paul Haley's letter entitled 'Support for High Street Traders'.

I recall illuminations at Barry Island, along the Parade and around the Lakeside in the early 1960's - well before Butlins arrival - so I assume their primary purpose must have been for the enjoyment of the residents of Barry as much as for visitors; as visitors in those days would have been day-trippers?

I'm not sure if his reference is a genuine error or was used to emphasise his point?

However I do think the continued relentless focus on improving Barry and the Island for the sake of attracting and retaining visitors, albeit that has some positive effects for the town; does seem to miss the point.

Amenities such as those should be as much for the benefit and enjoyment of residents of Barry as for visitors. Particularly as they are at least partially funded from taxes raised locally?
