SATURDAY, March 28, was a very special day for football in Barry and the Vale – with Barry Town United winning Welsh League Division Two, Cadoxton Barry securing the South Wales Senior League Division Two championship, and Cardiff Airport winning the Vale of Glamorgan league.

It can’t be very often that so many local clubs are successful enough to pick up silverware on the same day, and congratulations to them all.

Apart from those successful clubs last weekend, we still have Sully Sports in the hunt for the South Wales Division One title, Barry and Dinas Powys rugby clubs vying for their league title and Barry Athletic Cricket Club enjoying their 125th anniversary this year, and many, many more.

Of course, thousands of people in the Vale are involved in sport at all levels, from elite to keep-fit, as adults, young people and children, as coaches and trainers and as players, in teams and as individuals.

Sport is important in staying fit and healthy, and we need to promote participation and enjoyment for people of all ages – and to celebrate success when it comes our way in our hard-working and lovely town.
