Extracts from the Barry & District

News of March 25, 1965:

l As part of a major £150,000 re-organisation scheme by the Powell Duffryn group of companies, a modern timber planing and moulding mill is being erected on the site of a disused dockside timber yard at Barry Docks.

l There were record entries in the Urdd district eisteddfod held in Cardiff on Saturday when amongst the local competitors were pupils from the Welsh School, Romilly School and Barry Grammar School for Girls.

l Barry Town Council have refused to let Glamorgan County Council have seven acres of land to be developed as playing fields, because the land is needed for housing.

l Barry kicked off on a rain-drenched pitch and straight away Chepstow attacked well into the Barry half, but they were soon driven back on their heels.

l On Friday last at the YMCA Barry, the Barry Camera Club won the Habakuk Shield in a closely contested Print Battle against Penarth Camera Club.

Before a very large and appreciative audience, excitement was intense as the scoring continued almost level, until Barry were finally acclaimed the winners by 208 points to 204.

Barry members were highly delighted, as this was the first time that they had won the shield since it was presented in 1958, for annual competition between the two clubs.

l On Monday evening at the Sports Centre, Trinity completed the "double" over the YPA in a Division IV match by defeating them 6-0.

l Over 50 local supporters travelled to Manchester for Saturday's match between Barry Dockers and Grangemouth in the semi-finals of the Newlands Cup, a competition played between teams of ports in the British Isles.

l The finals of the Northway Cup 701-up four-a-side tournament was played at the Sea View Labour Club.

l The Dockers were successful in the first semi-final, against Ex-Servicemen, although the match went to the last of the three legs.
