WHENEVER I show visitors around Barry, one of the highlights is the 360 degree panoramic view from the end of Friars Point.

You can see Flatholm, Stepholm, the Somerset coastline, as well as being able to see up and down the Welsh coastline from Aberthaw to Sully, as well as a view inland covering the town of Barry. It's a spectacular view.

However, back in September of last year, a huge red warning sign appeared right in the middle of this outstanding beauty spot.

I was flabbergasted at how ill-judged the sighting of the sign was. It was ugly, inappropriate and destroyed the view.

Rather like putting a huge beware of heights sign at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

I immediately emailed my local councillor, Stuart Egan, who in turn asked the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s director of visible services for a comment.

Mr Punter explained the signs were erected following a risk assessment by the RNLI but agreed that in this case, the position of this huge sign was inappropriate and agreed to move it.

I understand this assessment was conducted following the tragic drowning of a young girl earlier in the year.

No one can argue with trying to make Barry a safer place for children but this sign was in probably the most intrusive position and there were a hundred more suitable places close by.

On my walk today I see that the sign has been removed. Local councils and politicians don't usually admit getting it wrong but when they do and then do something about it they should be congratulated.

So thank you very much Cllr Egan and the Vale of Glamorgan Council for saving a stunning beauty spot.
