THE “domino theory” was that if one country in Asia fell to communism then other would follow and this theory came to mind when news broke of yet another local post office (the Co-op/Williams Store) closing in Barry.

This hot on the trail of the Highlight Park closure (Barry & District News January 22, 2015 “Questions remain over Post Office”).

Each closure is due to falling business say the management. I can believe it. The very point I made weeks ago about the Christmas post is more relevant than ever. It is all very well for our MP and AM to praise the undercutting of the postal service by the Scout post which produces good income for them, but at the same time it diminishes foot fall in post offices and therefore impacts on their takings via sales of other goods too.

Before I read the howls of objection, I am a former Wolf Cub and Boy Scout; I support them financially by, for instance, being generous at the Romilly Park Summer Jamboree. At the same time this does not undermine the employment prospects of our post office workers and the organisation itself.

Come on please. A plea to our representatives in Westminster and Cardiff Bay; less populism and more thought, less photo ops with everyone and more effort and thought put into saving jobs and our PO’s, otherwise where will the axe fall next? High Street? Barry Road? Please, I hope not.
