POLITICS is a devious – sometimes cruel – business, even in this season of “goodwill”. This brings to mind the site at Hayes Road, Sully, occupied by caravan and trailer dwellers.

Remember this was an eyesore, a useful one, for many years, and a health hazard, when it was a Civic amenity site i.e. a rubbish site. Now occupied as above it can be argued it is neater and less if a health hazard.

The inhabitants are not Romany, gipsy or Sinti. I am aware of one Romany family there, they have since moved away to England.

The council have a legal obligation to provide at least one site in the Vale; to remove the Hayes Road people and reunite them on a new facility would be extremely expensive – look at Shirenewton or Rover Way sites in Cardiff. These are the days of austerity so it will not happen.

Furthermore, by continuing the status quo, the governing Labour group will not, in spite of the strong feelings of Sully residents, lose any or many votes.

The situation is therefore likely to continue ad infinitum, although it will not do Chris Elmore, the Labour parliamentary candidate any favours.
