I would like to make your readers aware that some children with Type 1 diabetes aren’t getting the support they need at school.

As the father of a child with Type 1 diabetes I know first hand how important it is for children and young people living with the condition to get the right care. Many children with Type 1 diabetes can struggle to get the extra support they need at school because of their condition. This means they are effectively excluded from taking part in important aspects of their education and I don’t want to see that happen anymore.

People in Barry and across the area can help make a difference to the lives of children and young people with Type 1 diabetes. All they have to do is let local schools know that Diabetes UK has resources that can help them give good care to children with diabetes, that have been developed as part of our Make the Grade campaign.

There are two packs available, one for parents and one for teachers, which provide practical tips and information on how best to support children with Type 1 diabetes so that they are able to make the most of their time at school. These packs are available for free from Diabetes UK’s website www.diabetes.org.uk/schools along with lots more useful information.
