THE area surrounding and following the Five Mile Lane and Weycock Cross is steeped in ancient history as was Barry of old.

The history of man here can be traced back around 6,500 years from flint arrowheads and other archaeological finds.

Sadly due to lack of knowledge, careless development and the urgency to go from rural agricultural settlements to busy dockland in a very short time evidence of early occupation of the area has been destroyed.

The likelihood of treasures yet to be discovered have gradually been wiped out as the town has grown.

We are now at the boundary with applications in to dig up the remaining areas.

It is believed Five Mile Lane would have been the main route into what we now call Barry from early settlements. Ancient tracks are evident which are most likely prehistoric.

If development goes ahead at the Weycock Cross area and Five Mile Lane we will almost certainly be destroying the last of our ancient history and all for housing estates that are only happy to give the new residents a ten year warranty.

Makes you think doesn't it.
