BEING a regular visitor to Jenner Park School I have the utmost sympathy for the residents of Hannah Street and adjoining side streets with the chronic traffic problems.

A relief road through the Council Depot site to cure the problems? I have grave doubts this will work. To begin with it will take years to materialise (Barry Island relief road springs to mind). There will be surveys, feasibility studies and substantial traffic management changes required at the Gladstone Road junction roundabout as well as the Barry Road traffic light junction.

No doubt the Vale has already decided to saturate an already busy area with additional housing (that will bring additional traffic issues) hoping that part of any contract awarded (probably Newydd) will incorporate a relief road.

Surely the quickest (several months), easiest and most cost effective solution would be to adopt the systems that exists for those side streets between Woodlands Road and Holton Road and Salisbury Road and Park Crescent. Designate Hannah Street and adjoining streets one way in alternate directions thus eliminating the current bottlenecks that occur.

This will then offer the Vale the opportunity to be innovative and use their initiative (don’t hold your breath) to use the site for the benefit of the residents in the locality. What better than building a complex alongside the current sports facilities to provide a variety of indoor sports, areas for local groups/organisations to provide classes/sessions to cover leisure time activities plus a cafe corner where locals can sit and chat over a pot of tea and a bun.

Come on Vale, time to think of the local community and not yet another refurbishment of your chambers.
