I HAD the privilege of attending Barry Town United’s annual dinner again last Friday. It was an opportunity to review the ups and downs of the past year.

It is difficult to believe that we were at the same event last year, not knowing if the club would be in existence or not. Since that time, there was the rejection by the Welsh FA’s Council, followed by the legal challenge against their decision; and now, the fantastic celebration of being Welsh League Division 3 Champions.

Full credit must to go the Supporters’ Committee. They have worked tirelessly in the interests of the club and community. They have been professional in their approach and have turned around the fortunes of Barry Town. Recognition must also go to coach, Gavin Chesterfield, his assistants and the players who have stayed loyal to Barry throughout. They could easily have gone elsewhere.

There are few places in Wales where football is more important to the community. Anyone driving past the Colcot playing fields on Saturday morning will see hundreds of youngsters playing for their local club. Buttrills playing fields are also packed throughout the week. A significant number of parents and football lovers give up their time to ensure the efficient running and organisation of local matches and leagues.

In view of the obvious importance of football to Barry, there is a clear need to improve and upgrade facilities. The changing rooms at the Colcot are not fit for purpose and need improving.

However, I want to use this letter to highlight the need for at least one 3G pitch in Barry. It is difficult to believe that Barry doesn’t have one. Football is a priority to the town and significant grants are available from the Sports Council to help finance the investment. Other local authorities make a profit on their 3G pitches.

What better way to recognise the success of Barry Town United’s season and pay tribute to all those leaders of local teams that are engaging young people positively in Sport, than providing for 3G pitches, available to all? This should be a local authority priority.
