I RECENTLY had the delight and privilege of attending the ‘Guiding and Scouting’ service at St Mary’s Church, Barry, which was followed by their St George’s Day Parade from King Square to the Cenotaph.

My purpose in writing is to highlight and recognise their fantastic contribution – hundreds of young people positively engaged in the community, showing respect to each other and manners, with a first class organisation.

Rainbow Guides from five-years-old through to Brownies and Guides, up to 16-years-old. Similarly, six-year-old Beavers through Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts, up to 18-years-old. The mix of uniforms was spectacular, without mentioning their achievements shown through the array of badges from Promise Commitments to Survival Skills.

They were a tribute to their leaders, families and society at large. The leaders in particular give up their time and energy to give the young people experiences that some could only dream of.

Awards were also granted to some long standing servants. A 50 year award went to Barbara Jones; Geraldine Feehan and Steve Clarke were also recognised for their dedication.

The Scout and Guide organisations offer so much to young people. It took me back to my days in the Cubs. I know from personal experience the difference they can make to individuals; confidence, leadership, discipline and a sense of purpose, amongst so many other attributes.

Locally, I have been involved in a number of their activities and am humbled by the development of the young people I have had the privilege to observe. Local authorities often fund community activities. I cannot think of an organisation more deserving or one that could offer better value for money.

On behalf of the community, I want to say thank you.
