I WOULD like to thank all the people of Barry who have donated their money or volunteered their time to our project to plant 700 native trees on the entrance of Barry as a living memorial to the Barrians who never returned from the ravages of the First World war.

We still need around another 200 trees to reach our total ... that means we need to raise around £300 to pay for the saplings, their protective equipment and organic fertiliser.

The UK has just 13 per cent woodland cover compared to a European average of 44 per cent and the trees we do have are under increasing threat from diseases and development. Trees provide oxygen, lock up harmful carbon, trap pollutants to give us cleaner air and water, reduce flooding and provide a fantastic habitat for local wildlife.

Can I also thank the Woodland Trust for donating 420 of the trees we have planted and keep Wales Tidy for our liability insurance.

Finally, if you would like to donate to the project then please make cheques payable to White farm Conservation Group and post to 118 Merthyr Dyfan road, Barry, Cf62 9TJ.
