Tax hikes really hurt

11:15am Thursday 21st March 2013

I READ with some dismay that the Vale council is now planning a council tax hike of 4.8 per cent on the people of the Vale - this does not include any further hikes in Barry Town Council’s charge, neither does it include any other charges from the police precept.

How on earth can they justify this enormous increase in council tax when the people are struggling to get by day by day.

More and more people are being dragged into the council tax system due to cuts to benefits and we have a bedroom tax that’s coming in soon, which will hit tens of thousands of people on housing benefit.

Many thousands of people are also taking pay cuts, including employees from the Vale council, and thousands of people have not had a pay rise for over three years.

It’s about time that the Vale councillors stepped out of their plush offices and walked into the real world.
