BARRY's RAFA Branch raised over £800 for the Wings Appeal by holding a fundraising charity concert recently.

All of the money raised from the night, which was held at the Dolphin Bar on Barry Island on Saturday (September 7), will go towards the RAFA Wings Appeal.

A range of emotions, from laughter to tears, from joy to somber reflection, was evident amongst an appreciative audience entertained by leading female vocalist Mandy Starr and supported by the renowned Cardiff Arms Park Male Voice Choir.

Although audience numbers were down on the previous year, those who attended applauded so appreciatively that one felt the roof was being raised. From lighthearted County & Western, Elvis, TV themes, West End musical classics to the Operas, there was music to tempt every palate.

The Branch and audience also gave a warm welcome to a young rising star of the future, Rosie, who sang a number of modern chart toppers. The Branch wishes her well in her ambitions.

The event would not be possible without major sponsors and Barry's RAFA Branch is particularly grateful to Independent Occupational Therapy Services, of Romilly Road in Barry, for its support, and that of the Vale of Glamorgan Council , which recognises the vast amount of welfare work carried out by the branch Welfare Officer. Without support any charity monies raised would be severely dented.

In addition to the raffle, an additional special prize draw of a painting donated by Marilyn Morgan, the artist, whose son is serving in the RAF, was held, which raised a further £80.

Thanks also to our guests Jane Hutt AM, Alun Carins MP, Barry Town Mayor Cllr Les Sword and his wife, who all congratulated the Branch on its continued success arranging memorable charitable events to raise funds for serving and ex-serving RAF personnel.

Barry's RAFA Branch, which has recently been recognised as the oldest branch in Wales, now looks forward to arranging events thoughout 2013, in celebration of its 75th Anniversary.
