Barry pub's sporting champions!
4:30pm Tuesday 11th September 2012 in News
AS TO be expected, sport - its winners and losers - is very much to fore at most pubs. And, at one establishment in Barry, predicting the outcome and selecting winners of major sports leagues and other events in this country and across the globe certainly brings its rewards.
The list of honours at Gordon Bennett's (Broad Street, Barry) during the last 12 months has included:
October (2011), Rugby World Cup - winner Mal Young;
New Year's Day skittles for the Gordon Bennett Cup (The Merry Men);
March (2012), Six Nations Rugby ('King of the Punters' - Chris Patten);
April (2012), Horse Racing Tipster of the Year - Russell Morris;
May (2012), Televised Football - Chris Patten;
May (2012) - Last Man Standing (Premiership Football) - Rhys Donovan.
The end of May always brings about the finale of the infamous KGB Big Money Premiership Football Prediction Competition and this year it was won by a 'man who knows nothing about football' but who has finished in the top 10 of the competition for the last five years - 'Beefy' Dowson.
He wins £500 and the coveted KGB Trophy. Other placings were: 2, Steve 'The Steam' Batt; 3, Kenny Bryl; 4, Germi; 5, 'Dodgy' Dee.
And, finally, The KGB European Footballers' Cup (July) was won by new champion Harry Edwards, who also won the sweepstake in this competition to pocket a total of £320.
Congratulations to all of the champions at Gordon Bennett's.
