BARRY residents, British Legion members and politicians gathered on King Square to witness the unveiling of the United States WW2 Memorial Plaque on the town's library (June 15).

US military representatives also attended the ceremony, celebrating the70th Anniversary of the arrival of the American GIs in the town, in the presence of Vale deputy mayor, Cllr Janice Birch and the Barry mayor, Cllr Les Sword.

Dr Jonathan Hicks said: "The ceremony on King Square, where the memorial plaque was unveiled by Sergeant First Class Peter Facchini, as representative of the US Military Forces, was an unforgettable occasion and I don't think I have ever heard The Last Post played with such emotion.

"It was a truly memorable experience and the memorial is a lasting legacy of the three-day Wartime Weekend event."
