A FORMER Welsh rugby league international, who has been elected the new chairman of Sully Community Council, says improving facilities for young people in the area is his top priority.

Cllr Malcolm Davies, elected chairman at the council's recent annual meeting, did not wish to comment on the recent problems that have plagued the council - which have seen various councillors attempt to pass motions of no-confidence against one another.

He said: "I am delighted to have been elected chairman and I will do my best to provide first class services for the communities of Sully and Lavernock.

"I am concerned about the lack of facilities for youth activities. It is my intention to encourage the council and community to set up more activities for them.

"These activities could be sports-led or social. There are also opportunities for sponsorship from local organisations." Cllr Davies played rugby union for Maesteg and Cardiff before changing code to embark on a professional career with rugby league teams Leigh and Bradford Northern.

He went on to represent Wales in the 13-man game.

He was a winger who played alongside the likes of Rex Willis, Cliff Morgan and Dr Jack Matthews at Cardiff. He is now a member of the former players' association.

On his return to south Wales, Malcolm Davies opened a china and glassware retail company and became a former South Glamorgan county councillor.
