Resolve to be green in 2009!

2:50pm Saturday 3rd January 2009

THE Vale of Glamorgan Council is offering recycling schemes and festive ideas into the New Year, to help residents stay ‘green’.

For those of you with real trees, the council’s recycling team will be offering a kerbside collection service once the festivities are over.

Between Monday, January 12, and Friday, January 16, 2009 leave your tree out by 7am on your usual collection day (ensuring all decorations have been removed) and the Vale recycling team will collect it. Trees will be transported to a local farm for composting.

The Vale’s garden waste collection service will be operating over the winter months on a ‘ring and request’ basis. If you need your garden waste collected then contact the council to arrange a special collection.

Normal weekly kerbside service will resume from Monday, April 6, 2009.

Many schools in the Vale will be supporting the ‘green’ Christmas theme by collecting Christmas cards and Yellow Pages as part of a recycling challenge.

For residents looking to get rid of unwanted items, the Vale’s recycling team has a few ideas:

If you’re feeling the pinch after Christmas, think about whether you could earn some cash through selling on auction websites or free advertisement sections of newspapers, rather than sending the item to landfill.

‘Bring and swap’ parties are a good way to find homes for your unwanted gifts among friends and family.

Don’t forget you can always give items away. Charities are always keen to receive items, and websites such as ‘freecycle’ provide the opportunity to recycle your goods by donating them to other people in your area.

If you really can’t find a home for electrical items such as toasters, hairdryers, games consoles or batteries, then you can take them to one of the Vale’s local household recycling centres in Llandow or Sully. They open daily between 10am and 4pm (closed New Year’s Day).

The Vale has over 40 bring sites where you can recycle paper, cans, glass, plastics, textiles and books (although there is no current facility for cardboard) so there’s no excuse for throwing things out.
