A BARRY woman is on track to raise more than £3000 for cancer charities by taking part in two marathons in memory of her dad.

Stacey Fordham-Gray will pay tribute to her dad Des Fordham when she takes part in the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday, April 22 and the Newport Marathon exactly one week after on Sunday, April 29.

Mrs Fordham-Gray, 29, recently swapped her career in advertising for one with Cancer Research Wales and she is now based in the hospital where her dad had his cancer treatment.

Her father initially had oral cancer which spread from his mouth to his neck, chest, and lungs, before he died aged 67.

Mrs Fordham-Gray said: “I absolutely hate running.

“Beyonce can only inspire me so far - usually two miles at most.

“Since being diagnosed with terminal cancer, just four weeks after walking me down the aisle, I watched my dad push himself both mentally and physically.

“He fought so hard each and every day he could to be surrounded by the people he loved most and for the first time in my life I was exposed to a battle that I couldn't win.

“No matter what I was willing to do or how hard he was willing to fight.

The start of 2018 has been horrendous and most days I'd rather hide under my duvet than lace up my Nikes yet I know that isn't what he would want.

“He always hated to see me cry.

“This month I am pushing myself to my limits, running two marathons in memory of my amazing dad in the hope that the money I raise will prevent other families feeling this pain.”

A total of £2,355 has currently been raised thanks to the generosity of 106 people.

She added: “Despite knowing that both marathons aren’t going to be easy there isn’t anything I am not looking forward to.

“My dad’s battle with cancer has taught me to count my blessings.

“I am fortunate to be healthy enough to run, and walk, the 26.2 miles of each marathon and crossing the finish lines in his memory will be something I know he would be proud of.
