THIS week the From the Archive section features a photograph of The Ladies Guild of the British and Foreign Sailors Society which was established in Barry in October 1909.
The Society was originally located on Subway Road near the railway arch next to the Dock Office.
The Ladies Guild were concerned about the welfare of sailors and offered practical help, hot meals, small treats, and evening concerts for sailors.
The Society’s key aim was to offer spiritual, moral, and social redemption to the sailor.
On Christmas night, in 1909, they helped to provide a hot meal and gifts for 125 sailors at the Institute and also managed to get 88 of them to sign a pledge of abstinence from all alcohol.
They must have been a formidable force in Barry.
The President of the Ladies Guild at this time was Clarissa Beynon, who lived on Redbrink Crescent, in Barry Island.
The secretary was Mrs Davies from Kingsland Crescent, in the town centre of Barry.
