ROMILLY Primary school in Barry has been chosen as a Foodbank champion school for the second year running.

A champion school is given a list of products the Foodbank particularly need rather than just being asked to make a donation.

Last year they were asked to collect sugar and rice; this year it was mashed potato.

John Hartland, of the Vale Foodbank, said: “I have done a number of assemblies with the children and this year we did a role play with one of the teachers acting as a client with a voucher from the Citizens Advice Bureau.

“The head teacher, Kelvin Law, suggested that the school do a Foodbank Friday on the last school Friday each month and since the Harvest Festival the school has donated 40kg a month.

This month they collected 70kg, a total of 150kg to-date.

A number of members of staff have visited the Foodbank at St Mary’s Church and been shown around and it has been proposed that the school’s charity crew attend a session to see how it works.

“To avoid any confidentiality issues they will attend before the clients come but one of the Foodbank volunteers will play the part of a client and the charity crew will follow his/her voucher through the system.”

St Mary’s Foodbank, in Holton Road, is the busiest Foodbank per session in the Vale due to its central location.

The Foodbank is open daily from 1.30pm to 3pm.
