THIS week the nostalgia section features Locomotive 22 at Barry Station with the former Barry Hotel and the now removed signal box in the background.

This locomotive was one of the first purpose built passenger trains built for Barry Railway Company in 1889 to 1890.

It started out pulling passenger trains from Barry to Cogan in August 1890.

While the Barry Railway Company mostly moved coal, the passenger service was very popular and the refreshment rooms at Barry Dock station boasted 7,000 customers a week.

However, the popularity of the passenger service had a downside.

The third-class carriages were crowded and poorly lit.

Frequent letters to the Barry Dock News complained the carriage were seldom cleaned.

The floors were littered with discarded cigar ends, chewing tobacco and everywhere including the seats were covered in a thick layer of coal dust from the clothes of the travelling dock workers.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
