A PROGRAMME providing good quality meals, food and nutrition sessions and physical activity to children living in deprived areas has been hailed a success.
The Welsh Government’s Food & Fun School Holiday Enrichment Project (SHEP) ran at Cadoxton Primary School from July, 31 to August, 17 and Ysgol Dewi Sant from July, 24 to August, 10.
The project saw several Vale council departments, including the catering service, the sports and play development teams, as well as the youth service and Communities First work together to give children access to healthy food and physical activity during the summer holiday.
Around 80 pupils and 50 parents attended the sessions.
Vale council cabinet member for learning and culture, Cllr Bob Penrose said: “During the school holidays, when free breakfast in primary schools and free school meals are not available, some families struggle to afford or access food that provides a healthy diet. Some children also miss out on socialising with others their age and activities to keep their bodies and minds active and learning.
“The Food and Fun programme fills this gap. It is part of a larger programme that is achieving great things across Wales and the feedback that we have received from those taking part here in Barry has been very positive.
“After being part of the initial pilot last year, and this summer being involved in growing the scheme across Wales, we very much hope we can make this an annual success for the Vale.”
WLGA spokeswoman for education, Cllr Debbie Wilcox said: “Schools provide a familiar and safe environment for children attending ‘Food and Fun’ clubs, which have been set up and run by existing school staff and partners over the school summer holidays.
“The scheme has engaged a variety of agencies providing enrichment activities that not only reduce the likelihood of learning loss, but to also spark interest in new sports, hobbies and forging new friendships.
“Across Wales, we are witnessing children enjoying fun and exciting activities, while parents report happier, more contented children that look forward to their next Food and Fun club day, which also alleviates the financial pressure felt over the summer holidays.”
