THIS week the nostalgia section features James Price – a confectioner and baker with outlets in Regent and High Streets, in Barry.

The image comes from an advertisement postcard for the award winning baker and confectioner Mr Price who owned a number of shops around the town including 87 High Street - which is now a popular curry restaurant.

Barry Town councillor Shirley Hodges, who submitted the photo, said: “Mr Price regularly won awards at the Universal Food and Cookery exhibition in London and boasts of this in the Barry Dock News in 1897.

“He tells us he’s celebrated for his ‘Bride Cakes and Superior pork pies’.

“He certainly is a very smart gentleman and was a very successful local independent trader of his time.

“There’s a long history of small independent businesses in Barry. Long may that remain, let’s all get behind the Shop Local Barry campaign, and visit our local shopping areas more.”

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Hodges for the information and for submitting the photograph.
