A SPOKESMAN for Barry Memorial Hall has suggested that a Post Office war memorial could be housed at the Gladstone Road venue.

The wooden memorial, which honours postal workers who died during the 1914 to 1918 conflict, has been relocated to the Royal Mail building, in Kendrick Road.

But Memorial Hall trustees have offered that premises with the aim of it having a more public view.

Paul Haley said: “I am sure that the Memorial Hall trustees would be willing to consider a fitting place to rehouse the Post Office memorial should they so desire.

“I am sure we would welcome working in partnership with the Post Office and Barry Town Council to ensure a suitable continued place of remembrance in our splendid building.”

The Royal Mail cares for the memorial, which will be rededicated at a future date.

A Post Office spokesman said: “Our protocol is that memorials are relocated to the local Royal Mail premises, in this case the same building, due to our shared history and the fact that at the time of the conflicts that the plaques commemorate Royal Mail and Post Office employees worked together at the General Post Office.

“The war memorial inside Barry Post Office will be relocated to a suitable public area within the Royal Mail building that shares the same site. This relocation will be supported by a rededication service.”

The three-dimensional plaque, honours postal workers who died during the 1914 to 1918 conflict.

The carved memorial was the first prize entry in the Eisteddfod held in Barry in 1920.
