A FIVE-YEAR-OLD schoolgirl raised more than £160 by selling cakes in memory of her cousin who was stillborn last year.

Ysgol St Curig Year 1 pupil Grace Vale decided she wanted to help her family pay for her cousin Alexander Kayden Cahill’s headstone and raise money for SANDS, the charity which provides support for bereaved parents and their families.

Grace was assisted by four-year-old sister Mollie, grandmother Karen Thomas, grandfather Anthony Thomas, mum Claire Cahill, Miss Cahill’s partner Natalie Brice, and Alexander’s parents Cathryn Jones and Anthony Cahill.

The youngster raised £167.20 by selling cakes with grandfather Mr Thomas from her home in Barry.

Grandmother-of-six Mrs Thomas said: “My granddaughter Grace who is five years of age, overheard us talking about raising money firstly to help my son pay for a headstone for Alexander’s grave but then also for SANDS which is the stillbirth charity.

“She asked me if she could sell cakes in my garden to help us raise money for her cousin Alexander.

“She mentioned it back in the summer to see if she could sell cakes as well to raise money for children who don’t have as much as she and her sister does but that never materialised.

"She has seen me many times raising money for cancer at Macmillan coffee events hence getting the idea.

“Even if she raised £20 we would have been happy.

“We are all so very proud of her and think people should see how kind she has been.

"She is a really caring person – always thinking of someone.”

The family is planning to stage a charity cabaret night to raise money for Alexander’s Star.

A Crowdfunding JustGiving site has been set up for people to donate if they are able to do so

AG Adams & Son is sponsoring the event which will take place at the Barry Island Sports & Social Club from 7.30pm on Saturday, February 4.

Tickets cost £4 and can be obtained by emailing clairecahill89@hotmail.co.uk
