HOME-GROWN acting talent Lloyd Everitt has championed Barry and its people after it was announced he had been shortlisted for a 2017 National Television Award.

The Casualty star, who plays paramedic Jez Andrews in the long-running BBC hospital drama, was nominated for the Best Newcomer award last year, but has now made the shortlist of four.

The category includes Coronation Street actress Faye Brookes, EastEnders actress Tilly Keeper, and Coronation Street actor Duncan James.

The winner will be announced, following a public vote, at the O2, London ceremony on January 25.

Mr Lloyd said hearing about the shortlist had been a “really proud moment”.

“I feel blessed," he said. "I was told at a staff meeting with the rest of the cast. They said Casualty had been shortlisted and the producer turned to me. It was a nice moment.”

Mr Everitt, whose sister has recently made him an uncle, thanked his family and friends and everyone who has shown him love and support.

His mother, he said, is planning to host a party at home and view the ceremony as it is screened.

The former Barry Boys’ pupil harbours fond memories of his upbringing and education.

“It was one of the most fun times of my life," he added. "I had all my football friends and there was lots of camaraderie. Acting was something I kept personal. I was just obsessed with films so I wanted to act. My school environment was more sporty.”

Mr Everitt said his ideal Barry filming location would involve King Square – possibly incorporating the fountains that once existed there; the clock tower and the former Dan Evans store.

He said: “I just want to champion the talents of Barry and how lucky I was to be surrounded by that and my family and friends. We didn’t have Facebook or social media when I was growing up, ee all had to go out and play. I want to thank my family, friends and the town for being so supportive.”
