PLANS are in the works to introduce a Cardiff and Vale Marathon in the future - which would see runners race through Barry.

Following the Cardiff Half Marathon earlier this month, it was announced that a 26.2 mile race could be staged as early as next year - as a "precursor" to the Virginmoneygiving London Marathon.

The two groups behind the proposals called the reaction to the idea "amazing", but have now said a decision has been made not to rush things.

Chief executive officer of Run4Wales - who are working with the Great Run Company - Matt Newman said: "The initial reaction after announcing we wanted to bring a marathon back to the Welsh capital region was amazing. It is obvious there is a huge desire from the running community within Wales and beyond for a quality marathon event.

“Having fully explored all the possibilities with Cardiff Council and Vale of Glamorgan Council regarding the best possible route we have decided not to rush things.

"There are a number of opportunities that need to be further explored in order to deliver an iconic route for the runners to enjoy."

Mr Newman also said that rather than try to stage the event in 2017, they feel it is more important to provide the "perfect course for runners of all abilities".

"In the meantime, there will be an event in April 2017 that will give everyone a flavour of what we want to deliver a year later," he added.

“This will include training events at venues around the course, information for runners and a general build up to what we hope can become a huge day in the Welsh sporting calendar.”

The two companies will now work alongside Cardiff council and the Vale council with the aim of staging the event in 2018.
