MILLIONS of visitors are flocking to the Vale of Glamorgan, according to new statistics.

Figures by STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor) reveal just under four million tourists made their way to the Vale in 2015, which is a 5.6 per cent increase from 2014.

The figure meant an overall value to the economy of £219m.

STEAM also calculated that 5.4 million days were spent in the Vale last year by tourists, which was an increase of five per cent from the previous year, and 2,947 jobs were supported by money spent on tourism, which was a rise of 5.7 per cent from 2014.

New walkways, a ramp to the beach, changing rooms being converted into toilet facilities, are just some of a few steps which have been praised for making the Vale much more attractive for tourists.

Councillor Lis Burnett, deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration and education, said: “The council is thrilled by the new STEAM figures, which show a major growth in the Vale’s tourism industry over the most recent assessment period.

“We have committed substantial funds and resources to make the area more attractive to visitors, most notably at Barry Island, which has undergone a sustained period of improvement, and are delighted to see that investment paying off.

“The money brought in by tourism has provided a significant boost to the local economy.”
