THE Vale of Glamorgan parliamentary constituency could be split in two if proposals from the latest boundary review are given the go ahead.

The review, if accepted, would see the current Vale of Glamorgan constituency be replaced by two newly-formed constituencies, the Vale of Glamorgan East and Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan West.

Barry would fall under the planned Vale of Glamorgan East constituency, according to the review.

The review also proposes for the current number of Welsh MPs to be cut from 40 to 29, with the Ogmore constituency being redesigned to become Ogmore and Port Talbot.

The Boundary Commission for Wales, which is undertaking the review, was launched on Tuesday for a 12-week period, where people can express their views on the proposals.

Alun Cairns, MP for the Vale of Glamorgan and Welsh Secretary, said: “Boundaries should be drawn up in an impartial and independent way so I welcome the Boundary Commission’s proposals to implement Parliament’s instruction to ensure equally-sized constituencies. Without these reforms, MPs could end up representing constituencies based on data that is over 20 years old.”

Jenna Robins, 30, from the Vale of Glamorgan, was "deeply unhappy" at the recommendations.

She said: "Why on earth would someone want to split up an historic area like the Vale of Glamorgan.

"It will look really silly for people living in the Vale of Glamorgan together to then be split by silly boundary changes.

Matthew Griffiths, 41, "fears" for the amount of money which would be spent if the changes are implemented.

He said: "If the constituency goes, then God knows how many signs and letters will be made useless.

"You could not have a signs mentioning the constituency of Vale of Glamorgan if it no longer exists.

"Our bin collections will have to change also - just more and more money being spent."
