DESPITE torrential rain hundreds of people from around Barry turned out for an enjoyable 1940s-themed event.

On September 3 and 4, the Barry At War Museum group hosted the annual Wartime Weekend event at Barry Island railway station.

On day one of the event a formal flag-raising ceremony took place, with the Vale and Barry Town mayors, Alun Cairns MP and Jane Hutt AM in attendance.

Visitors to the Wartime Weekend, which is held to raise awareness and pay tribute to all people from Barry who participated in wars, saw a range of static displays of military vehicles and equipment, a range of historical artefacts from private collections and listened to classic music from the era.

For people who were interested in military history, the museum group set up the Ops room, where a variety of talks and audio-visual presentations were given, including a short film, Letters Home, which commemorated Welsh soldiers who were killed at the Battle of the Somme.

The fun-filled two-day event was concluded on the Sunday with the flag-lowering ceremony.

Jane Hutt AM, who attended the event, said: “There was a packed schedule at the Barry Wartime weekend event with a 1940s theme, including music, displays and home front items. I was very pleased to meet 90-year-old Barry war veteran Stan Smith.”
