A PLAQUE has been unveiled to commemorate the life of a popular Barry dance teacher who died in December last year.

For 29 years Barbara Wilson ran dancing classes every Wednesday and Thursday at Colcot Community Centre up until she passed away in December 2015, at the age of 81.

As this year would have marked the 30th anniversary since Mrs Wilson started the classes, Colcot Community Centre decided to dedicate a plaque to the late dance teacher on Tuesday, September 6.

The unveiling was attended by many of Mrs Wilson's friends and family and also the mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, councillor Stuart Egan.

Warm tributes were heard, and the event was followed by refreshments and a buffet.

Apart from her dance work, Mrs Wilson was an active member of the Colcot's committee, having served as treasurer for a number of years.

During her time on the committee, the late dancer was credited with playing a key role in helping to get curtains and a new kitchen for the community centre.

Jackie Key, Mrs Wilson's daughter, said: "First and foremost my mum loved her family, her second love was without a doubt, dancing.

"She was formidable in getting things done.

"After the unveiling, someone came up to me and said 'I met your mum three years ago and she changed my life for the better' - this truly sums up what was mum was like."

A member of Colcot Community Centre said: "We deeply miss Barbara. Not only her modern sequence and line dancing lessons but her as a person.

"It was lovely to see such a wonderful lady being honoured by having a plaque.

"I know I'm not the only one to say that she'll be long remembered for her work at the community centre."
