WHITMORE Bay continues to be the scene of "disgusting" rubbish being abandoned, despite widespread outrage.

Rhian Lees, new chairman of Pride in Barry, has spoken out against litterers causing 'disgusting' scenes at Barry.

Miss Lees decided to go on a walk on Sunday, August 7 from Jacksons Bay to Whitmore Beach, where she became 'dismayed' at her findings.

"Jacksons Bay was virtually spotless, apart from a couple of plastic bottles.

"When I came to Whitmore Beach it was a totally different story.

"There were disgusting scenes of litter."

The Pride in Barry chairman filled one bag of rubbish within a couple of minutes.

"I didn't expect it to be as bad as that," said Miss Lees."It is quite upsetting - this is a beautiful beach and people are not respecting its beauty.

"If it weren't for this litter pick, the rubbish would have ended up in the sea."

Miss Lees also expressed 'surprise' at litterers continuing to cause environmental offences, despite recent media coverage.

"There is no consideration. The simple thing is to put rubbish in the bin," said Ms Lees."Despite the press, rubbish is continuing to be dumped."

Barry Island made headlines on July 19, after people captured 'disgusting' images of litter scattered along the beach.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has since announced plans to introduce £75 fines on the spot to deter potential litterers.

Pride in Barry will be launching a litter pick in the foreseeable future.
