A PROJECT which helps people in the Vale gain confidence, skills and employment, has been shortlisted for a national award.

The Greenway project has been nominated for Best Training Scheme at the 24 Housing Awards.

Newydd housing association introduced the project in 2014.

Chief executive of Newydd, Paul Roberts said: “The successful outcomes we have achieved from this project mean a lot to us. Supporting local people to get back into work is vital not only to aid individuals and their families to gain a better income, but to improve quality of life, increase confidence and secure a better future. We are delighted that the Greenway project has been shortlisted for the 24 Housing Award. We hope many more people will be able to access the opportunities available from the courses and training we and our partners offer.”

The four-week course helps Newydd tenants and the wider community to improve interviewing skills, learn how to budget and maximise income, gain accredited qualifications, reduce anxiety and write CV’s and job applications.

Seventy-one people took part in the course.

Nine people secured employment, 16 started volunteering, seven had work placements and 19 went on to further learning opportunities.

The project has since expanded across the Vale works in partnership with Barry Communities First and Job Centre Plus.

Newydd has been shortlisted for another three 24 Housing Awards, including Communication Team of the Year, Affordable Housing Scheme of the Year, for The Old Station, St Athan.

Cath Kinson, a Newydd tenant in Barry, has been nominated for Tenant Champion. Award winners will be announced on October, 6 at the 24 Housing awards ceremony in Coventry.
