RESIDENTS who have been waiting years for a second road linking Barry town to Barry Island have described its current one-direction operation as a “nightmare”.

The temporary 'one way' system, which runs under the railway bridge, means motorists visiting the Island along the causeway can drive under the bridge to get to the Old Harbour car park and Plymouth Road, but can’t drive under the bridge to leave Barry Island or go to the seafront.

A left turn is also not currently available at the bottom part of Plymouth Road.

Drivers can leave Barry Island, but those wanting to use the route to Barry Island, from ASDA, can only get as far as the Old Harbour car park.

The road opened on Friday, following months of delays which caused outrage among residents and traders.

The council had said the one-way system is intended to be a temporary solution, while completion works take place.

Phyllis Street resident, John Moore, said: “I think the new Plymouth Road junction was designed by Stevie Wonder. It’s an absolute nightmare.”

Clive Road resident, Jeanette Green added: “I am appalled with how the residents of the Island have been treated for such a long time.

“What a load of rubbish. It's more of a nightmare than it was. Whoever designed this new layout obviously doesn't live on Barry Island so yet again we as island residents have to suffer again.

Island Residents Association chairman Ian Bailey called the fact it was open at all 'a start', though.

He added: “When the road is open fully, it will make a big difference to visitors coming onto the island and make it easier to get off too.”

Vale Council managing director, Rob Thomas said: “The road is only useable in one direction due to on-going construction works within the redevelopment site, and on-going works to complete the off-site highway improvements at Paget Road.

“This arrangement will continue to exist throughout the summer period and into the autumn. It is anticipated that all works associated with the new road, including the off-site highway works will be completed by the end of the year.”

Last week the Vale council said the road had been opened two years ahead of schedule.
