TWO young litter pickers have been praised for their efforts in tidying up Whitmore Bay.

Two girls were spotted voluntarily picking up piles of rubbish left on the Barry Island beach after droves of people soaked up the sun on the hottest day of the year on Tuesday.

Staff at O'Shea's Fish and Chip Shop on the island caught images of the state of the beach before and after the litter pick and said the girls - who are not known - decided to tackle the problem themselves, putting every bit of litter they could into black bin bags.

Now, the leader of the Vale council has praised them for their efforts in keeping the beach tidy.

Councillor Neil Moore said: "There are over 100 bins, which are regularly emptied, at Barry Island so there really is no excuse for littering but all the same these two young people deserve all the plaudits they are getting.

"We are lucky to have one of the UK’s great seaside resorts in Barry and this is a great example of our proud community coming together to ensure it is not blighted by the actions of an irresponsible few."
